Water Utilities

The City of Garland Water Utilities department is closely monitoring the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), state and local health officials, our national water professional organizations and our Water supplier, the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) for information regarding water and wastewater treatment during the Coronavirus outbreak.  The following information was received  on March 11 regarding water quality from Tom Kula, the Excutive Director for NTMWD:

Water and Wastewater System Partners,

I want to provide you a link to information we’ve posted on our website to provide information to the public addressing questions about the new coronavirus (COVID-19) and water/wastewater treatment.  https://www.ntmwd.com/coronavirus-covid-19/

Here are a few key takeaways:

• Based on current evidence, the risk to water supplies is low.

• Coronaviruses (and other viruses) do not persist in chlorinated/chloraminated waters, such as those used in the water treatment process and the transmission of drinking water.

• Standard municipal wastewater system disinfection practices, including ultraviolet irradiation and/or chlorination, are effective in controlling the virus provided utilities monitor and maintain required disinfection levels during treatment.

In addition, your Garland wastewater crews remind you that flushing ANY KIND of wipes can cause a back-up of the sanitary sewer system. Remember, ALL WIPES go in the trash, NO exceptions, no matter what the label says.  Thank you for your help as we work together to stay healthy and safe.  DefendYourDrains
